That Pesky High School Health credit

I often get asked  “What do I do for high school health?” . “We already covered showers, teeth, etc…what else do I need to cover?”
Here are a few things outside the “box” which is by no means an all inclusive list..
1. CPR and first aid certification from the local health dept
2. The whole family goes to the eye doctor. One of you gets the optimap where you can see the optic nerve and retina on the computer screen. My eye doctor charges extra for this versus the regular eye dilation but the results are amazing.
3. Have the student research carbohydrates and proteins. Then plan a meal high in protein, low carbs. Make the menu, choose the recipe, make the grocery list, go to the store – use coupons- and cook the meal
4. Track yourself walking or running a mile and over a “semester” improve your time
5. Drivers Ed class
6. Read articles on : fruit, heart health, hypothermia, tornado safety,
7. Word study on: strength, endurance, exercise, leisure
8. Read prevention magazine or other health based magazine articles on a particular topic and share findings- ie chicken pox vaccine- yay or nay or treadmill vs elliptical for knee problems or prevention of knee problems
9. Bible study- I Timothy 4:7-8, II Timothy 2:5
I hope this helps. There are other options to a textbook, be creative!

Try Knowledge Quest’s “Expedition Earth” FREE

imageGeography was always a favorite subject over the years in our homeschool journey . Mapping and studying other countries cultures is an important part of understanding who we are as Americans and our role in the world. Knowledge Quest has some great products- here is one you can try free.

Maybe you already know about Expedition Earth, but if you don’t, this is a great time to check it out.

You can try Expedition Earth for FREE by downloading the Expedition Earth Sampler pack. It contains several country pages along with lesson plans. This is a great way to learn about the fascinating corners of our world.

It’s all at this link:

If you don’t love Expedition Earth, that’s okay, but it certainly does not hurt to check it out for free. If Expedition Earth is not for you, maybe another one of Knowledge Quest’s products would be the perfect fit. I’m especially partial to Map Trek and A Child’s Geography. 🙂

Enjoy and let me know what you think..

Which Timeline Should I Use?

What About Timelines?

Which Timeline Should I Use?A question I often receive in the Kurriculum Korner store is, “What timeline is best for me?”   I really like Map Trek, a set of historical outline maps published by Knowledge Quest. Just as maps help our students understand the WHERE of history, timelines help us understand the WHEN and IN

WHAT ORDER of history. But here’s the problem with timelines…

Most homeschool parents decide that they will make one themselves. Certainly, it can’t be too hard (it’s not and there are instructions on how to do so at the link below!). But for those that would rather not hassle with making one, the next big decision sets in… which format should I choose – a wall timeline, a book timeline, timeline software or maybe even a mobile app?

Here’s some great news! I am sending you a link to an article by Terri Johnson that breaks down the process and makes the decision easy for you. If you have been putting off a timeline purchase because of indecision, read the article below. If you aren’t in the market for a timeline, just delete this email (or better yet, save it in a special place where you can find it again when you decide that you do need one after all.) 🙂

Which Timeline is Best for Me?
By Terri Johnson

The question I receive most frequently, I believe, is which timeline will best suit my students’ needs. Choosing a timeline is an important and subjective decision and a tough one at that, with so many great options to choose from. However, I do believe that every home educating family needs a timeline, particularly if you have students in 4th grade or higher.

Perhaps you are the crafty type. If so and if you would prefer to make your own timeline, I would love to show you how I made mine.

In The Chronicles of Narnia, an enchantress tries to recapture the Narnian Prince and enslave his rescuers. She entrances them with dark magic, soothing music, and silver laughs.

As she begins to persuade them that the world to which they belong and the Lion they love are only a childish dream, one of them resists her. He bravely stomps out her fire, burning his feet but freeing his companions.

In Mere Christianity, Lewis ìstomps out the fireî of political correctness by offering a biblical perspective on all things moral.

Click the video below to learn more about notebooking

and hear our personal notebooking testimony.

(Link will open in browser window.)

“After 5 years of homeschooling, I knew I wasn’t giving my kids the “best of the best”. I didn’t want them to turn out like me, a great student who 20 years later, with high school & college diplomas in hand, doesn’t remember much of anything taught. When we notebook our studies, quite frankly, the knowledge STICKS. Lightbulbs click and eyes shine! We have a growing treasury of their homeschooling journey.”

It seemed like our homeschool was lacking something. The workbooks were dry and boring or repetitive. I discovered your site a year ago, purchased a year membership and we started our notebooking adventure! We have slowly integrated it into our homeschool day and now we are ready to start using it with all of our subjects. It was hard to tell myself to put those workbooks and other materials we purchased out of sight and stick with the notebooking. I can see the difference in my kids, they like school, they want to do more! My children really enjoy being creative with their notebook pages. Notebooking is helping me to teach language arts to my children the natural way with out all the boring workbooks that sometimes bring tears. This method of homeschooling has inspired my children to learn, to explore, to be creative and to write!

I am a new homeschooling mom and I wanted to make our homeschool different than anything my kids had ever seen. In school they had busy work and nonsense questions that didn’t challenge them at all. Now, after a year of creating wonderful, engaging notebooks on many subjects, they now create their own pages and ask me to notebook everything from a recent family vacation (complete with pictures and drawings) to a great recipe we created (they are writing their own cookbook). These pages make our school day fun exciting and different every day!!! Thank you Debra!!!
— Lisa

Join today and immediately receive over $100 in homeschool e-gifts from our member sponsors … homeschool planning/planner resources, lapbook unit-studies, art & music mini-unit study, new homeschooler help, Bible curriculum, nature study resources, etc.

With 4 children in many different age ranges, I needed something that would be easy to access and put together without a lot of extra time spent creating something they could all use. Notebooking Pages has been just that! We read over the material and use the pages combined with some lapbook style ideas to create a wonderful learning experience that we will always remember. The Lifetime membership was well worth it!!

Change in Hours for November and December

As usual, this time of year business slows down significantly.
As of November 1st, I will go to by appointment only until after the New Year. Please pass this around to those friends you know are not on the loops. I am still here and am very flexible so call or email me if you need anything, want to change directions in your curriculum choices, need additional practice or supplements etc. I will open again with regular hours after the holidays. As I make appointments, I will post them both here, on the loops and on facebook in case you want to do some shopping. Especially those we make ahead of time, so I can give you notice.
I do not go away for the holiday season so please do not hesitate to call on me. I am here to help. I will continue to post things that I think are of value as gifts. Please continue to follow me here and on facebook for news and updates.
Thank you for all your support this year, there were some sales records broken this summer!

Helpful Tips for the SALE next week~~

Helpful Hints for making the most out of the sale next week
I made the hours 11 am – 7 pm Monday thru Friday to try to accommodate everyone’s schedules. If you can work it out with a friend to take turns with the children, dads can be home or you can find a teenager from the neighborhood to sit, you would be more relaxed and less distracted.. Children are always welcome. They are also always distracting, fidgety, whining to go – anywhere but here, etc.
1. If you bring the children, bring something for them to do, eat, drink (eating and drinking will take place outside) etc.
2. Use the bathroom before you come- I only have one accessible to the shop and it is also my families and in the house, not really a public bathroom.
3. Park on the stub road, not on the red bricks- George had someone towed last spring. Parking will be tight, carpool if you can.
4. If you have a blog- post for me please
5. There will be a daily giveaway and a door prize after the week for an Amazon gift card.
6. The shop will be 20% off with some exceptions which will be marked.
7. No Drop offs next week
8. Prior commitments where I have made you a pile or set things aside for you ie- life of Fred, teaching textbooks, Heart of Dakota, abeka 7th grade etc are excluded from the sale.
9. No items will be held without payment which we can do over the phone.
10. Bring your list—put it in your bag now so it is not on the desk while you are here.
11. If you find what you came for at a really good price, post a review, post on the loop and tell friends- word of mouth from someone other than me is the best advertising.
12. No haggling over prices..if you want to buy it for a few cents less somewhere else, that is your prerogative. Pricing is competitive and designed to benefit not me, but your fellow homeschoolers. Thank you for understanding. 
13. Have a good time and take home lots of goodies !!
See you there–

Annual Book Sale Tips— re posted May 1, 2018

Annual post about DO’S and DONT’S for the book sale

over the years- 15 in business, more than that attending fairs, I have learned a little about book sales 🙂
This is not criticism, just helpful hints

1. if you want it to sell, price it well – Abeka, BJU etc are very prevalent in the resale market. 1/2 retail is about what you will get.
people always ask me what I would sell it for, if you price it too high, you will take it home with you.

2. if you are buying- know your prices and editions or take catalogs with you . If you buy a previous edition and cannot get the consumables (and want them), its pretty useless..

3. DO NOT use permanent stickers on the covers of your books- they never come off and if they do they take half the cover with them. I have to remove them or cover them up if you bring your books here. packages of stickers which I buy buy the 1000’s all say either permanent or removable on the front. File folder labels are not removable

4. If I come to the sale and offer you less than you are asking it is because I am going to re sell it in the shop. I cannot pay you more than I can sell it for. Then it is up to you to accept it. It’s okay to say no. This has caused contention in the past and I wish to avoid that in the future.  I am not insulting you or your book, I just know what that particular book will sell for in the shop- sorry, but I would prefer not to take a loss.

5. if you sell things online- please make sure you know how much it will cost you to ship it before you price it. You do not want to sell something for $5 then pay $4 to ship it meaning you made a dollar. If you need to purchase an envelope, it is more and your time to the post office is valuable.

6. take lots of change and $1 bills to the sale. you cannot expect someone selling to give change for a dollar book from a $20 or $50- it will wipe them out and may cause them to lose another sale if they have no change left

7. if someone wants something you already sold, please forward them to the Kurriculum Korner- I have a lot of the things that have been showing up on the loops in stock. They all belong to other local home school families .

IMPORTANT
I do not want all the rejects- I want the good stuff too. If you would not come here to buy it, why would someone else? If you sell all the teaching textbooks, apologia and rod and staff english, etc you did great. Do not bring me all the 1/2 missing workbooks, the older edition teacher manuals and all the books that your teacher friend or relative took from her stash and gave you because she thought you needed them to be able to successfully teach your child. (we all have one of those -LOL)

I will be OPEN that afternoon if you want to shop here too..I will NOT be accepting consignment items that day- please read the policies and use the scheduling app to make an appointment.
